Screening
A key component of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign is a sepsis protocol that utilizes a tool for early screening and recognition of sepsis. A screening tool is the first step to implementing the sepsis care bundle. Through the use of a multidisciplinary team, UCSF Medical Center leveraged the existing electronic health record (APeX) to incorporate continuous sepsis surveillance in the Emergency Room and on 4 pilot inpatient units. The sepsis surveillance system is constantly scanning data for key triggers within vital sign, laboratory, and nursing documentation that identifies early signs and symptoms of sepsis. These alerts, called Sepsis Best Practice Alerts (BPA), assist clinicians in identifying sepsis from its earliest onset and guide them to implement sepsis care from order sets based on the Surviving Sepsis Campaign’s recommendations.
